Who we are

The Disabled Journalist Behind Five Star

Sarah Kovac was born with a rare disability called arthrogryposis multiplex congenita (commonly referred to as AMC). It kept her shoulders, arms, and hands from developing properly, but it didn’t take her long to learn that she could do most things other kids did – she just used her feet like hands and found her own way.

She continued forging her own path through college, marriage, motherhood, and her career as an author and journalist. Along the way, she found so many unique methods of doing life that people (sometimes complete strangers) started reaching out to her when they were in need of hands-free solutions. She had a lot of creative ideas, but she also knew that so many people with disabilities could say the same. It’s a group of people who have been solving problems for decades, and they have so much to share.

Sarah began finding ways to use her career in media to pass the mic to the disabled community, and the community did not disappoint.

USA Today

Reviewed, which at the time was a division of USA Today, was first to host the vision: a collection of articles written by the disabled community, for the disabled community.

Consumer Reports

Sarah then pivoted to a consulting role with Consumer Reports, where she built their accessibility coverage from the ground up. She brought together the best disabled and aging journalists, and she teamed them up with the acclaimed Consumer Reports labs. The result was a treasure trove of data and real-world expertise.

Five Star Adaptive

As an independent entity, Five Star Adaptive serves as the home base for Sarah’s endeavors to give voice to an underrepresented demographic that has so, so much to teach all of us – disabled or not.

On the Horizon

As so many are currently aging into the need for creative solutions, Sarah is a valuable resource for outlets and organizations that recognize the need to become more inclusive in their language, outreach, and product development.
