Description
Why is it adaptive?
For someone with arthritis or limb differences, getting your hair up and off your neck can be quite a struggle. This hair tie was designed by an amputee to make this task doable and even easy!
–
TL;DR
Love it:
- Many ways to use
- Creates tight ponytail
- Color options
Meh:
- Long strings to wrap and tuck
Don’t need such long strings? Check out this shorter version, which also happens to be quite a bit cheaper:
Adjustable Hair Tie
The nitty-gritty:
The 1-Up Hair Tie is a method of creating a ponytail for those with one-hand or those who have reduced hand function. You can also use it to create pigtails, buns or wear it has a headband. The device consists of a long hair elastic with a toggle on it. You can use it to create a ponytail with one hand or with hands that have reduced function by putting the elastic around your head and pulling. You can then wind the excess string around the ponytail.
There are several methods of using the 1-Up Hair tie to suit different abilities.
You can use the 1-Up Hair Tie if:
- You have broken your arm or wrist
- You have paralysis in the hand, arm or shoulder
- You do not have hand(s) or arm(s)
- You have other upper limb mobility challenges
How to Use:
Put the hair tie in with one hand, residual limbs, two hands or your feet! The ‘double loop’ tie has a secondary loop to help you tighten the tie around your hair. If you struggle to grip the tie well enough to pull it tight this might be the hair tie for you! The button color for the loop may vary, we will choose one for you at random.
Will it work for me?
With the 1-UP Hair Tie there are a few things you need to be able to do, no matter your abilities and differences:
1. Can you put a headband in your hair? (Part of setting up the 1-UP to make a pony tail)
2. Do you have strength needed to pull the elastic tight? (Need to be able to pull tight to get the best hold on your hair)
3. Can you reach the top or back of your head? (Need to be able to reach a little to guide your hair to the desired pony tail position – and to wrap or pin up the loose ends of the elastic)

Works but not easy
It does work but if you want good results where the pony tail is in the middle of your head, or everything even it’s not very easy to get.

Such a good idea but don’t bother
What I Like: The idea of a one handed hair tie. The color. The way it looks. What I dislike: It won’t stay tight. I wanted it to work so I tried a bunch of times, but each time it loosened up and fell out. What you should know: My hair is thin. Maybe it would work with thick hair.My rating: Don’t bother.

Useless as a one handed hair tie
If you truly only have one hand, or one functional hand, this product is useless. Even the instructions direct you to use the “impaired arm.” That doesn’t work. You need two functional hands with good strength and finger dexterity to use this product, in which case you might as well just use a regular hair tie.

Waste of money
This product absolutely does not work. I had a stroke and have only limited function in my right arm. I couldn’t get my hair in a ponytail with this despite trying all the methods in the directions and watching YouTube videos. I had nothing but frustration and I will be returning this

Didn’t work well.
I have long hair and limited mobility. I was hoping this would allow me to put my own hair up again. It created unsightly bums in my hair and was difficult to use.

Not so easy to use
I ordered these because I broke my wrist and I was unable to use my left hand at all. These were impossible to make work, even with help.Unfortunately, the return window has closed so I’m stuck with them and I’m out $$$.

Works well with alot of practice.
With practice this gets faster and easier to use. I had to be patient and I’m glad I kept at it . It was worth it.

Worked well with 1 1/2 hands
I recently had a cardiac pacemaker installed and was given instruction not to raise my left hand above my head nor behind my back for 6 weeks. Since I normally wear a ponytail, this is a problem; there is no way I can do that without using both my hands in the proscribed manner. This allowed me to put my hair in a pony tail fairly easily with minimal use of my left hand. It was awkward to do it with only one hand (although doable), but with primarily my right hand, with minor assist from my left, it was easily achievable.

Doesn’t work for shoulder length fine hair
I got this to pull my hair back after shoulder surgery. I can’t use my left arm for 6 weeks. Maybe if I had really long thick hair this would work, but mine is fine and shoulder length. No matter how many times I tried it kept falling out and twice got tangled in my hair. Very disappointing.

Just ok
I got these to use following rotator cuff surgery and they are just ok to me. The idea is good, but with one arm in a sling it didn’t work as well as I had hoped. I think they probably work better if you have some arm use.

Doesn’t work
Zero stars. When I purchased this there were no reviews but I really needed it because I had surgery on my right hand and couldn’t put my hair in a ponytail-among other things. What could be so bad? Right? If it was really a useless product there would be some negative reviews, or so I thought. One of the other things I couldn’t do was type easily on a computer or phone. Now I see my mistake. The reason there were no reviews was not because this product is not bad but because everyone buying it has trouble using both hands and probably can’t easily leave a review. It’s just too much trouble. I still can’t easily type but I thought I owed it to fellow consumers to warn them that this product does not work. I tried it numerous times. Read the directions over and over. If you can’t use both your hands then this is no help. Save your money. It’s worthless. Unfortunately, by the time I could somewhat use my hand the return window had closed so I never even got my money back. Literally insult to injury.

lose at least one star due to packaging
Bought because I only have use of one hand to put up my hair. Comes in a box that clearly requires two hands to open. After about 10 minutes of wrestling with my one hand and two feet, I finally got the box open. For one tiny non- breakable item. Think about it 😬🙄

Needs work
My sister ordered this for herself and at first she loved it, but then hates it because on one side her hair is perfect and then on the other side, she has a bunch of hair sticking out.

makes very loose ponytail; loses hold quickly
This does make a sort of ponytail, but it loosens too easily. It’s a great idea, but the toggle doesn’t stay cinched. I really hope the company can make one that’s tougher and stays cinched.

Gives me independence
I search for years or something to put my hair up by myself. I am so happy I found these. I have extreme weakness in the lower extremities and all this makes it possible for me to put my hair up. I tie a knot in both ends. Thank you so much.

It does its job
As I recover from rotator cuff issues I needed a way to get my hair up. I find the 1-Up easy to use, since I have one arm that works regularly and the other can reach partway up and hold the string. I have to make sure it is super tight or it will just slip out. And I have to keep my finger between it and my hair until the last second to minimize it getting some of my hair stuck in it and pulling. But it certainly works and is a great relief in the summer heat.

Doesn’t work and pulls out your hair
Does not work for people who only have one hand. If you get it on, it’s really loose and if you try to tighten it, it pulls out your hair. Do not recommend.

Worked great!
$20 was a bit pricey for three but I am so glad I purchased them! After five months of dealing with a left frozen shoulder and subsequent lymphedema from breast cancer ( no surgery) I haven’t been able to use my left arm and hand. I have fairly long fine (but a lot of it) naturally curly hair. Every night was an exercise in futility trying to put it up before I went to bed, even my husband couldn’t help, he’s a construction guy not a hair stylist. When I searched tips online I came across this and thought I would give it a try, I am so glad I did!

FYI-if your the fingers of you working arm lack the strength to push the release/tighten bottom, these WILL NOT work..sadly 🙁

Not for one handed use
This product sounded like it would work and I watched many videos. This does not work if you have one hand. It’s extremely difficult to move the slider without the use of your other hand. Then if you do manage that you have to hope that it actually grabs your hair and doesn’t fall off. It does come with three of the hair ties and may work with more practice, but with all the hair products out there I would find something else.

It works. But not perfectly.
I will say that this product does work. However, I have use of both my hands. I can’t comment on trying this with one arm. The product did come with instructions of different potential methods of use. I think there’s potential here. It just needs practice and a little creativity like anything in life if you’re disabled. I was able to get my hair up into a pony tail, but it wasn’t the prettiest. I’d have no problem just using this at home to get my hair out of my face. If I were going out in public, I’d probably just have someone do my hair with a standard hair tie. I do like this product. I do believe it was created with good intentions. The price is a little high for what this is. But it seems like these are hand packed and shipped. Overall, if you want a simple way to tie your hair up. This could be useful. If you have an aide or someone to help you. I’d just ask them for help and use normal hair ties.Separate pro tip: Always keep a pair of scissors handy. They make dealing with packaging much easier. They have tabletop scissors if you can’t hold them in your hands.

Easy use.
I love, love, love this. I have limited use of one hand following a severe neck injury. I am finally able to put my hair up in a ponytail when it is really hot. Instructions are clear on how to use depending on your ability. I cut the pull string elastic to a better length for me as I don’t need it to be as long as originally made. Stays in place and easy to remove.

Great in conjunction with barrette
I wasn’t able to use this well as intended. Instead, I used it to hold my hair temporarily in a loose bunch. Then I used my one good hand to put a barrette in, just above the cord of this hair tie. Then I removed this hair tie. It’s not quite the intended use, but it got me to my intended result

I’m impressed!
This device made it so easy to do my own hair. I lost the ability to move my left hand about 2 years ago and haven’t done my own hair since. So when I tried this and it worked I could’ve cried.I did need a little practice before it looked decent but it was definitely worth it. 10/10 do recommend!

So useful
After 40 years unable to tie my hair directly behind my head I am now able to tie my hair up which is so nice. They don’t hold well for long but are quick to redo when needed which for general daily use is all I need.

Not useable if you only have one hand
Due to injury I am not able to use my right hand/arm so thought these would be ideal as it said one handed. However you do need the use of a second hand to use these. Very disappointing

DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY!!!
I bought these out of desperation after a shoulder replacement has left me unable to put a bobble in.Yes, they pull your hair into a ponytail, however, the instructions tell you to wrap the extra tightly around and it will stay in place, IT DOESN’T and because of the material it is made out of it rips your hair out when you try to remove it. Gave it one star because I can’t give it a minus score!!

Useless. If you only have one hand with no other arm to assist, you can’t use this.
Completely useless. It’s described as something you can do one-handed, yet if you look at the videos, they’re all using more than one hand or part of an arm missing a hand to put this on. Hence, it doesn’t work for people who do not have use of both hands, such as those who have a shoulder in a sling or can’t move their arm.

Nope!! Notice the model in the video has TWO perfectly good arms. I had a stroke and can’t use my left arm. This contraption is much shorter than the one in the video where she wraps it around her arm. Returning it. Also too expensive.

Not for people with 1 arm
I wanted this for a couple yrs after having a stroke. This is not for people that can only use 1 arm, if you can lift both arms high get it but if you can only lift 1 arm don’t waste your money also it just slipped off the back of my head every single time

The best is you have one arm or in a cast
Put one loop on your toe, then slowly stand up with the other loop around your neck. . Pull up gently, perfect pony tail!!!
