Why is it adaptive?
This captioned telephone provides real-time text captions of everything the caller says, making phone conversations accessible for people with hearing loss. The device can be particularly beneficial for individuals with hearing impairments, auditory processing disorders, or those who experience difficulty understanding speech over the phone. The adjustable amplification feature allows users to set their preferred volume level, while the captions provide visual confirmation of what was said.

FINALLY! Dad can use the phone
Oh my goodness! Dad just turned 90 & he has a terrible time using the phone because he cannot hear. This works very well. It takes a land line phone service and internet service to work. There is a short lag time between what the caller says & when he can read the text. Not a big deal. He shares an apartment complex internet and we do notice a small problem with the text showing up on a RARE occasion. Most of the time he can hear the phone ring! YAY! That’s a first in the last couple years. You can leave a message that he can retrieve. It has a call history. He uses that too. A cellphone was impossible for him to use & frustrated him like crazy! This had taken all that away. It’s a nice looking phone, good quality. The buttons are easy for him to push. The ringer volume is excellent. He can hear that from 5 feet away. But cannot hear you talk to him 1 foot away!!!

works as stated
My mom needs hearing aides but has gone years without them. I got her two phones that were designed for people with hearing difficulties. She was missing important information from callers and I was getting frustrated. I started searching for another type of phone. I ordered this and connected it through blue tooth. All aspects of set up were very easy. It gives you so many options to meet the needs of the user, volume control, ring tones, text size, number of rings, speaker phone, etc. I am really impressed with this phone. I kept it for four days before giving it to my mom to make sure it worked and that I understood how it worked so when she asked how to do something I could tell her over the phone. Now when I call her I can hear her reading what I said. She is happy that she knows what I said and I am happy that she is not asking me to repeat everything. It is worth the price. Another reviewer stated that it lost everything when it lost power. I put in 3 contacts before I unplugged it to take it to my mom’s place. When I set it up for her the contacts were still there as were all of the settings I had changed.

Phone messed up
This is the second model 2400I Hamilton captioned phone I have had to go bad after a thunderstorm. Yesterday after a storm I found the 2400I showed a message that “The phone line was in use.” I unplugesd the phone line and power and plugged it back in, It rang showing an incoming call, and kept ringing. I unplugged power and went to use another phone on that line, Line was dead on all the other phones, I unplugged the phone line to the 2400 I and the line cleared up, but anytime I plug the phone line into the 2400 I the line becomes ded. I like the features on the 2400 (touch screen) but I can’t afford to spend $75 at Amazon every time we have a thunderstorm. this one was purcharsed in 2023.

A worthwhile purchase
My mother-in-law is in her mid-90’s and has basically lost her hearing. She could no longer talk on the phone as she could not hear the caller. I had begun looking at caption phones and found the Hamilton CapTel 2400i. It had what I was looking for in a phone for her.The setup is very easy and can be hooked up via ethernet cable or wifi for the captions. I liked that this model uses computer generated captions. You can opt for the human assisted caption help via the internet connection if you want. We have yet to have the need for that. The icons on the screen are large and the menu screens are easy to navigate. You can adjust the size of the captions as well, if the user can’t see smaller print. I had this set up in less than 30 minutes and she has been able to talk to people on the phone she has not talked to in years. This has been a very good purchase.

PERFECT TO USE
This company, CapTel, should be shouted from the rooftops! I installed one of the phones I bought in my Father’s house. Being a Systems Engineer, I thought no problem! The problem was finding the correct box to plug it into and the CapTel Rep stayed on the phone with me the whole house hunt! Their service is impeccable!THE BEST IS CUSTOMER SERVICE IS JUST ONE CLICK AWAY ON THE PHONE!

For the hearing impaired
This was the best gift I ever got my dad. The phone is a lot louder than any other phones not for the hearing impaired. Being able to read what the caller is saying helps tremendously. You can also review the call log and reread your calls as well. It has answering machine and a large touch screen that easy and intuitive. A smart purchase for anyone that has major hearing loss or is deaf.

Christmas surprise
I ordered this phone for my partially deaf dad who can not hear anyone on a phone, and we’ve tried many different phones. He was so surprised and so happy with it. He called every one he could think of on Christmas day. It worked perfectly and it was so easy to set up, it came with very easy instructions.

I love it!
I am deaf in one ear and hard of hearing in the other. This is truly the phone for me. I love how I can go in under Settings, then Tone, and set my decibels. I have never been able to do this before. I have a profound Hearing Loss. This level is characterized by thresholds above 91 dB, where individuals may only hear very loud sounds. For the first time ever, I was able to go to custom section and actually set my hearing decibel! I set it to profound 90 db! I can hear and read the caption. I was also able to change the captions to the color I want. I have had other caption call phones in the best, this one is truly the one for me.

Easy FCC registration and setup
Pro: Phone cord, Ethernet cord, etc included. Setup and FCC registration was simple. Touch screen works great. Auto-caption is nearly instant with “live operator assist” option tuned off. Works great in existing MagicJack environment (VOIP) as an extension line. Honestly, it’s so much nicer than I expected.Con: There aren’t any con’s however I wish it was available in a lighter color or even white. It’s midnight black which we all know attracts dust. Otherwise I’m a very satisfied new customer.

Wife loves it
My wife’s hearing loss made it very difficult to communicate using our land line phone. I would need to convey what was said to her. She can now communicate directly with the caller. The auto caption has been sufficient for her. I connected to the internet using an Ethernet cable, rather than Wi-Fi. I would recommend for anyone with severe hearing loss.

Wire to receiver prone to failure
I bought this phone to replace an almost identical CapTel phonefrom several years ago for my mom.The old phone failed due to design defect which this phone shares.Be aware that the cord between the receiver and phone base ishard wired into receiver. Over time the wire fractures internallywhere it enters receiver, creating static, and eventually dropped conversations. This could have been prevented by using modular phone jack on wire where itmeets receiver making just this wire replaceable, but no, because of bad designor planned obsolescent, you have to replace entire phone when receiver wire goes bad. What a waste 🙁

Very helpful in understanding a phone conversation
I have been wearing hearing aids for over 20 years. I have almost always had problems hearing when using the telephone with or without hearing aids. Recently I saw a commercial on TV that advertised a Free phone and caption service for anyone with a hearing loss. This “free service” is paid for by Federal Tax Dollars. When I asked my audiologist about this service she referred me to a company called CaptionCall. CaptionCall came to my home with a caption phone and after I provided personnel information, they set up the phone and explained the features. When I questioned this person about the requirements to use Caption phones, he explained to me that at one time the FCC required that a persons hearing loss be certified by a third party, he explained that is no longer the law. In fact, now a person must register the caption phone in the name of the person who is using the phone and that person must require caption service due to their hearing loss. In other words, while a third party is not required to certify a hearing loss, the user of the phone must still register the phone and certify that caption service is needed for that person to understand a phone call. I was also told by CaptionCall that if I ever stopped using the phone I had to contact them and they would send me a mailing label for me to return the phone, and on the bottom of their phone it specifically states it belongs to CaptionCall. After learning the above I decided to look and see if I could actually purchase and install my own phone, The Hamilton Captel 2400i is considered to be the best caption phone on the market. I purchased it and a few days later installed in completely unaided by anyone, in fact if you can read you can install this phone. This phone while offering the same services as the phone “loaned” to me, has a much better user interface panel which tosses out a lot of the guess work I had with the CaptionCall phone. I also learned that my old phone can still be attached to my phone line while using any caption phone. For me this was important because all the caption phones on the market have a wired handset, so you cannot walk away from the phone and continue the conversation. ( in this day and age why are they still using a wired handsets?) Anyway my old phone has a wireless handset and I can use it while roaming outside in the yard or within reason where ever I need to be while on the phone. This is also important because other household members cannot use the caption call phone unless the caption feature is turned off. I recommend anyone who has a hearing loss to get this phone, even if you received a free one from a government funded supplier, get this phone. No matter what caption phone you use, the caption phone service is still free. Remember you must have a landline connection, and high speed internet service that you would pay for anyway. The caption service is done over the internet, and yes this phone will connect wireless or using cat5 cable connected to your router/ phone modem. I am going to return the so-called free phone I was given. If I had know before hand that I could have purchased my own caption phone before taking a ” free phone”, I would have purchased this long ago.

Easy setup
So I have never wrote a product review before but I was so impressed with this telephone that I had to say something. I got this for my dad who is 90 years old even though he has hearing aids he has a hard time hearing on the regular telephone and trying to pull up his contacts or add contacts that was almost impossible. So I took a chance bought this phone and let me say it was the easiest thing to set up it was set up within 5-10 minutes and not only that but my dad can add his own contacts and the speaker works great on it he can hear real well and when they type out the message it’s almost exactly on point. The best thing about it though is that he can hear the other person on the other line with such Clarity that he doesn’t even really need to use the written words as much. I already give this a thumbs up with a rating of five. Once again this is the best investment I have ever gotten for my dad and the ease of setting it up and him being able to understand how to use it is very impressive I recommend this to anybody that has any kind of hearing impairment because it really is true to what it says.

For people who don’t hear so well, this is a wonderful telephone.
The captioning is a must for me, because women’s voices are hard to understand over a regular phone. The phone, itself, is so much clearer than any other we have tried. It has many features and settings, including a button to call customer assistance. It is wonderful to be able to chat with friends and family, again!

Works great!
I’ve only had this a couple of weeks, but so far all is good. The automated captions come through quickly and the volume on the phone is really good. The setup was easy. I like that it has a built-in answering machine. I was able to enter my contacts easily. The screen is large and bright. I’ve found it easy to use.I haven’t had a call yet from someone with an accent or difficult to understand so I’ll have to see how the captions perform when that happens.Overall, this was just what I needed to help make phone calls more pleasant, as my hearing loss, even with great hearing aids, often makes callers difficult to understand. Definitely recommend this.

Works Great!!!
I have been in the hearing aid industry for 30 years, I bought this for my hard of hearing administrative assistant. It arrived the next morning I took it to work and it was WiFi connected to my office router in just a few min, and registered too. It works great and keeps a log of the calls, and the entire written conversation, so you can go back and read it if need be. Love it.

EASY FOR AN 92yr old
Thank god!! I bought this for my 92yr old who is dead and doesn’t have the best vision. Super easy to install for anyone who isn’t tech savvy. The phone reads out everything said on the other end of the line in words onto the screen. The read out is very accurate and keeps up super well. The print and button size is perfect. She doesn’t use battery life just plugged into the wall. Easy to control the volume. My 92yr old aunt can use this phone with no issues mind you she can barely work a tv remote. Such a good value for the money.

Thank you for making this!
My dad has not been able to use a phone for years, he can’t hear what people say and doesn’t understand anything so he quit answering it. My son lost his other grandfather last week and said he wants to be able to talk to Grandpa – we saw this and it has been HUGE for their relationship! My dad answers his phone now, can actually have a conversation and if it doesn’t write the words correctly he may ask a question and the 2nd time he understands – we LOVE it thank you!

I can have a real conversation with my Dad now!
I bought this for my dad who’s in his 90s. It has been a life changer for our whole family! My brother called me and said he can now talk to Dad and have a regular conversation with him for the first time in years! Same thing with me! It’s so nice to talk to Dad and he can understand what I’m saying! My Dad is so excited about this phone that he likes to repeat what he’s reading back to whoever he talks to with the biggest smile on his face because he now knows what people are saying. I’m so thankful for this phone, and I wish I would have known about them sooner. My Dad says the speaker is nice and strong too so he can hear better too, then along with the display he has complete understanding. I set the whole thing up for him with my photo, and my siblings on the home page so all he has to do is touch our photos to call us. I went step by step with the instructions to get it all set for him.

Great product when used with the ethernet cable.
This is my second Hamilton CapTel 2400i Captioned Telephone. Liked the first one so well, I purchased a second one for the second floor of our home. I have very little hearing left and was especially pleased that the captioning is easy to read, very quick and accurate. We hooked it up to our wi fi, and if was fine for a week or so, then we couldn’t get captioning. My son read up on the reviews and found others had experienced the same problem. They said it is remedied by unplugging the power cord from the back of the CapTel, then plugging it back again, then going through the set-up which returns the captioning. We did it and it worked! Only problem was, after every call, we had to unplug, than plug back again. This got tiresome after a week or so, then on a hunch, we tried switching to ethernet instead of Wi Fi, and that solved the problem completely! Just wanted others to know how much difference the ethernet cable made.

I can finally use a phone!
After flying in the military and 33 years in the fire service I lost my hearing several years ago after I retired. I do OK one on one with my hearing aids providing there is NO background noise, but phones have been out for several years for me. My poor wife has had to handle all phone stuff since I can’t. I’ve missed talking to family, friends and grandkids etc. It’s been very frustrating not to be able to conduct business as well.I was hesitant due to the low price and all, but can tell you it’s an awesome full feature phone, not a cheapie. t was very easy to set up. In order for the captioning to work you need high speed internet. Transferred all contacts from my cell seamlessly. I was only using my cell tor texting. Also works great with my Xfinity VOIP home phone. First call was from my wife in the other room with her cell. I was shocked! It worked flawlessly! I then began calling family. The cation transcribing is very quick and accurate with no delay I could detect. Remember though for captioning you need high speed internet.I was finally able to conduct a critical piece of business today for the first time in years. My poor wife is happy as I don’t need her to handle all my business anymore. Why I never did this before is beyond me. I’m a happy camper. I would suggest this phone to anyone with significant hearing impairment.

That is much better with understanding what’s going on on the phone!
Between the extra loudness and the text (not always accurate, but generally closer to the subject more than what he was “hearing” before having text to read) that is able to follow telephone conversations much, much better – he’s starting to call friends again. This is a win.

Solid. Works well. Change your settings.
Pretty easy to set up. You have to testify you are hearing impaired to use the service, but they make it easy by choosing to do it on the web, fax, or even snail mail. Needs an Ethernet cable to your router or connect via WiFi.There is a slight lag between voice and text. Neighbor thinks it’s too long, but I think it’s reasonable delay given the technology. Wonderful for voice messages.Pretty easy to use. The default settings is the volume turns down after each use, but there is an advanced settings where it stays amplified. The default is that it amplifies low tones, which is not where most people have their hearing loss, so most will need to change that as well. Much much clearer and louder than Clarity or Panasonic phones.

Big screen so you can see the print easily.
The phone seems to work well. My sister hasn’t used it much yet but likes the screen size so she can see the captioning well enough to read. I purchased this for her because she can barely hear anything anymore. Got sad and tired of seeing her ask whomever she was talking to ten or fifteen times what they said during a phone call and was looking for some kind of solution for her and the people who call her. A big plus also is the amplified handset makes it so she can also hear them a little which helps her understand the conversation better. Hope it last a while. Good phone so far.

Records and transcribes answering machine messages too!
I have worked in telecommunications for over 40 years, so I know a bit about phones. I did not have too high of expectations of this device when I purchased it for my mom, however, this piece of equipment really impressed me.The set up was quite simple for anyone who has ever connected something to a wired or wireless network. On bootup, the large color touchscreen directs you through a simple set up wizard and we had the thing up and running in a few minutes. It was a bit cumbersome using the somewhat sluggish built in touchscreen keyboard to do the online registration, but we only had to deal with that the one time. The transcription works quite well, and the amplification on the handset can be set crazy high. The most surprising delight was when I discovered that this phone has a built-in answering machine. Not only was my mom able to retire her old answering machine, which she was unable to hear very well, but at the press of a button this amazing phone will transcribe the recorded message as well! It also very clearly displays all of the information about the call with the time date, caller ID caller name displayed clearly on the large color display.I did have to go into the settings and enable the phone to remember it’s last volume settings so that she did not have to continue raising the volume for every call. All in all, it’s probably the best $75 dollars I’ve ever spent.

Me and My Aunt can finally have a conversation
This mobile device is exceptional, precisely what my Aunt, who suffers from significant hearing impairment, required. The setup was swift and straightforward. I appreciate the inclusion of all necessary components, including ethernet and telephone cable, which simplifies the process. By simply registering the information and establishing Wi-Fi connectivity, she is now able to engage in conversations that were previously unattainable. This is a substantial improvement in her communication capabilities.

Money Well Spent
Lately, mom’s been having more frustration hearing me on the phone. I thought something was wrong with her phone, but no. And her hearing aids were checked. And accents had always challenged her in phone messages.CapTel to the rescue. After reading stories of so many folks in my shoes, we thought it was time to try captions. Great instruction book that even she can understand. Quick set up. Put in all her contacts and she began practicing making and receiving calls. She is comfortable now and really likes not having to ask to, “please repeat that.” She has a landline jack and ethernet we could connect to. The only negative is she has a new location to answer the phone, in her den, not the kitchen bar. But she is ok with that. As an active 95 yr old, she is happy to leave phone frustration behind. My husband has hearing loss and even with his aids, he struggles sometimes with phones. He wants this at our house, but at this time, I am delaying. We would have to get phone service and wire the house. Have to check into that. But I see it in the future. Great product, don’t hesitate!

Cannot get to work but the phone assembly is nice and what I wanted – also – not sure how much of the problem is with XFINITY/Comcast whose internet and phone service i have. But at age 80 I am exhausted trying to call them then when you get an answer the menus are useless to the problem so I sit here looking at a dead phone and getting no where and it is impossible to find a human to help although the agents in the Philippines are very nice and do things but in reality nothing happens back here at Lake Frederick – this is so frustrating and now painful to this disabled Marine who has reached his limit and throwing money at XFINITY is such a waste I am sick of it.

For an elderly parent it is needed, the volume is definitely louder on the handset as well as the speaker. The text display overall is decent but does throw some weird words in the transcripts occasionally. The bad is it will get disconnected and not work, then you have to go thru a setup config again which is a hassle. I’ve nearly sent it back twice already but hold out since it is helping somewhat.

Great device!
Great captioning phone, but more importantly and did not know when purchased, is that the actual handset does a great job for the severely hearing impaired. You can adjust tone and volume. Great product!

Great for hard of hearing!!!
I’m very hard of hearing at 86y/o, and this phone is really nice for me. The only problem I’ve come across is that the people I’m talking to seem to have a hard time understanding me sometimes. My son said I sound faraway and the connection is somewhat staticky at times. I don’t know if this is the phone or the internet connection.
